Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand
Ok.. I thought a lot about Rishikesh and Dehradun but I think Delhi is he best destination to start Char Dham Yatra.
Gangotri (Origion of river Ganga), Yamunotri (Origion of
River Yamuna), Badrinath and Kedarnath are for sacred places called as Char
Dham of North India.
Char Dham Yatra starts from Yamunotri, a famous holy shrine
and origin of Holy River Yamuna. Dehradun has its own Airport nearly 20 km from
the main city and 20 km from Rishikesh. Air India, Kingfisher and Jet Airways
operate daily flight to the Dehradun. From Dehradun Helicopter (Pawan Hans)
facility is also available https://www.himalayanheli.com/chardham-charter.php.
To reach Yamunotri by road, one can take Dehradun- Mussorie-
Barkhot-Uttrakhashi route to reach the temple or Deradun-
Rishikesh-Chamba-Uttrakhashi. I would suggest the first one. You can still
escape Mussorie if you are only interested in Pilgrimage. Why first one because
the route I will be narrating down will cover all destinations of second route
too.
Delhi to Dehradun is around 235 km which takes 4 hours
approx when you start early morning, otherwise can take much more time due to
traffic. From Dehardun to Yamunotri another 170 km depend on route you
take. Dehradun to Mussorie will show
some sign of traffic thereafter very less traffic you will find on the way. So
my advice will be either take a halt in Mussorie if its already dark or drive
litter further to Barakhot. From Barakhot to Janaki chati is another 30 km.
Don’t forget to fill your tank in Barakhot as that is the last patrol pump till
Yamunotri. After crossing Barakhot till Hanuman Chatti road is nice. In Hanuman
Chatti a small Lord Hanuman temple is located and as per myth this is the place
where Lord Hanuman stopped the way of Pandavas. From Hanuman Chatti to Janaki
Chati road is bit dangerous. It’s your choice either hire a taxi or drive your
own vehicle at your own risk . From Janaki Chatti to up to the temple there is
no road facility. Its 7 km trek and most of the time it will be raining there.
Temporary rain suite (Plastic cover) can be bought in Janaki Chatti. (product)
From Janaki chatti to the Yamunotri steep climb of 6,50
km starts which takes you from approx
8600 feet to 10650 feet. The path is a concrete track. Horses and palkhis
carried by four hardworking youngsters can also be booked.
By Doli (cost you around 1500 to 3500 depend on your
bargaining skills and season)
Horse Ride (500 to 1400 again season and bargaining both
needs to be taken care)
By walk only health condition needs to be taken care
Same day back to Janaki Chatti, take a cab or drive to
Barakhot.
Next to Gangotri
From Barhakot to Gangotri is around 190 km. Most of the
tourist take a halt in Uttarkhashi and it is good opportunity to visit
beautiful mountain city and have Dharshan at Vishwanath temple. If you really
intended to stay at the base location of Char Dhama (Janaki Chatti, Gauri Kund,
Badrinath and Gangotri), it is always advisable to book the hotel in advance
(Product) and also look for GMVN (Gharwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) will provide you
best deal.
People who are coming from Delhi to Gangotri can take
another route. Rishikesh is around 280 Km from Delhi. From Rishikesh to Chamba
50 to 60 km and from Chamba to Uttrakhasi 70 km and Uttrakhasi to Gangotri
around 90 km. Again preferable halt station could be Uttarkhashi due to plenty
of good hotels.
Note- Volvo, Luxury, semi Luxury and plenty of common
buses are available from Delhi Anand Vihar and Kashmiri Gate stations. It will
cost you around 130 to 1000 rs depend on bus class.
There are direct buses to the Dhamas from Dehardun Bus
station or Rishikesh bus station but it is minimum 9, 10 hours bus travel. No
night buses are allowed. So be careful if you are taking public transport.
My suggestions (Product)
Sleep early and get up early to reach to your next
destination. Take few days extra in hand so you can halt enjoy the nature and
relax properly. I would advise minimum 10 or 11 days is ok for Char Dhama.
