Nanda devi Raj Jat Yatra
Nanda devi Raj Jat Yatra is 22 days long festival and celebrated once in every 12 years. Yatra, a Hindi or Pahari word means trek or pilgrimage to God. Goddess Nanda devi is worshiped in many places of entire Garhwal-kumaon region of Uttarakhand.

Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra starts from Nauti Gaon (Village) which is around 25 Km from Karnprayag in Uttarakhand and goes up to Roopkund and Homekund.

There is many stories behind it. One of them is that once king took dancers to this sacred place which annoyed deities. Heavy rain and snowfall killed all of them. There are many other folklore and scientist have their other theories too (See Roopkund) and mystry behind roopkund lake)

Another myth around is that Goddess Gaura (Parvati) was the daughter of king of mountains (Sail Putri) who married with a yogi with leopard skin (Lord Shiva). It is believed that Goddess Gaura comes to visit her mother’s places (Mait in local language). All people of locality escort Goddess Gaura to her in-laws place in Gaufati Peak after visiting her mother’s. A four horned sheep guides the Raj jat Yatra. Villagers take the Goddess in Doli. Doli of Goddess Nanda will be also joined by many Dolis of other prominent Devtas (Gods) of Himalayas.
