Mystery behind Roopkund lake, (RoopKund Uttarakhand India)

Many theories and tales build up behind the presence of skeletons surrounding Roopkund lake in 16000 ft. These skeletons could be 300 to 600 human bodies are dated back to 1000 BC. Altitude of the lake is inhabitable. Reason of death in such a huge number are still uncertain but most of the scientists believe natural disaster like land sliding, blizzard, high altitude sickness and epidemic could be behind it.  There are skeletons of men, women and children’s. Some of the DNA, s are matched which indicates some of them belongs to same families.
When we searched around we found that there are different theories and believes about the lakes like it was trade route from Garhwal to Tibet, once a Moughal army was travelling to Tibet via this route, a group of devotes of Goddess Nanda got trapped in hailstorm etc.
In 2004 a group of scientists comprising of Indian and European scientists made a significant breakthrough. They unearthed many secrets like there were two separate groups and one group was significantly taller than other.
As per the first theory, there was trade route between Garhwal regions to Tibet. A group of traders (can be Chinese or Tibetans) was trapped in hailstorm. They lost their way and died due to hypothermia. There are few points which contradict the theory.

  • No connection could be established so far of any kind of trade route through Mount Nanda devi to Tibet or China.
  • If these peoples were traveling for trade some animals should be accompanying them to carry items and luggage etc. but there were no bodies of animals found.
  • The size of some skeletons are approx 7 feet or taller than that. They could not be natives as dwellers of these areas do not have such build, even Chinese and Tibetans are also do not .
Second theory says that Moughal army lost their way and they died due to high altitude sickness or heavy hailstorm. The point which supports this theory is that the skeletons are of the bit taller peoples which are taller than Garhwal region inhabitants. But again here are few contradictions

  • No weapons are found surrounding lake if Moughal army was travelling via this route then it was obvious at least some kind of weaponry should be traced out.
  • Bodies of female and children’s are also found which contradict with army theory

Another theory says that it was a group of pilgrimage which get cough in bad weather and died. Local folklore also point out that a group of pilgrim consisting a king took some dancers on the pilgrimage which annoyed the Devi. This theory sounds much closer

  • There were two groups one could be king of some other reason which were tall and the other group of locals which can be porters of local pilgrims.
  • Local’s still performs a Nanda devi Raj Jat Yatra (Pilgrimage) in every 12 years to Mount Nanda Devi. It could be seen that in past during one of this kind of Yatra a group of unfortunate pilgrims died.
